Who Decides What Counts as Psychological Knowledge?
Psychology is a science. But science does not begin with data. It begins with decisions.
Someone decides which questions are worth asking, which populations are studied, which measures are considered valid, which research receives funding, and which findings eventually become part of the psychological canon.
In Episode 3 of The Gatekeepers of Sanity, Dr. Brian Ragsdale asks a deceptively simple question: Who gets to decide what counts as psychological knowledge?
Psychology has developed increasingly sophisticated methods for studying human behavior. Yet the people and populations historically represented in psychological research have not always reflected the diversity of the people to whom psychological theories, assessments, and interventions are eventually applied.
That creates an important scientific question.
What happens when research conducted with particular populations is treated as knowledge about human beings generally, while research centered on Black communities, LGBTQ+ communities, and other historically marginalized populations is categorized as specialized or population-specific?
The distinction matters.
One population can quietly become the standard. Everyone else becomes a variation from that standard.
This episode examines how gatekeeping operates throughout the production of psychological knowledge, from the questions researchers choose to investigate to the assumptions embedded in psychological measurement and the institutional processes that determine what research receives attention.
Dr. Ragsdale also challenges a common misunderstanding about representation in science. Representation is not simply about demographic diversity. Different lived experiences can lead researchers to notice different psychological phenomena, challenge assumptions that others take for granted, and ask questions that might otherwise never enter the scientific literature.
That does not mean lived experience replaces scientific evidence.
It means lived experience can influence what we recognize as worthy of scientific investigation.
Questioning these processes is not a rejection of psychological science. It is part of making psychological science stronger.
And before something becomes accepted psychological knowledge, somebody has decided that it belongs.
Transforming Minds delivers one question, one idea, and a different way of thinking about psychology and the systems shaping our lives, all in under 10 minutes.
